After Premier League clubs broke their summer transfer record by spending £3.49 billion ($4.7 billion) before the window shut on Tuesday, AFP Sport looks at the key talking points:

Man City, Chelsea lead spending

Pep Guardiola's exit after a glorious decade as Manchester City manager sparked a major overhaul by his successor Enzo Maresca.

Maresca smashed the Premier League record for a single transfer window by spending £458 million on a host of new faces in a bid to reestablish City as England's preeminent force.

City have failed to win the title for the last two seasons and, with Rodri, John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Savio and Tijjani Reijnders among the recent departures, the club's Abu Dhabi powerbrokers responded by flexing their financial muscle.

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was prised from Chelsea for £125 million -- equalling the record fee paid by a British club -- while Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson arrived for £116 million.

Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye was signed for £65 million, with Lille's Morocco teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi costing £85 million.

Chelsea might have lost Fernandez but new boss Xabi Alonso still spent £349 million to reinvigorate a team that finished 10th last season.

England midfielder Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa for £117 million, while Maxence Lacroix, Emiliano Martinez, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson are all proven Premier League performers.

Spurs spend big, Arsenal consolidate

Already installed as the bookmakers' favourites for the Premier League crown, Arsenal were hoping to add a marquee forward in their bid for the club's first back-to-back English top-tier titles since the 1930s.

Interest in Real Madrid's Brazil winger Vinicius Junior and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez ultimately failed to end in a deal for either.

But Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, bolstered by the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis, has little reason to fret, as his team proved by starting their title defence with consecutive wins.

At the other end of the Seven Sisters Road, big-spending Tottenham could not afford to be as measured as bitter rivals Arsenal in the transfer market.

Desperate to avoid a repeat of last season's relegation battle, Spurs lavished more than £300 million on new signings.

Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali, a £100 million capture from Newcastle, was the biggest of those deals, while Roberto De Zerbi brought in Chelsea duo Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo to make it 10 arrivals since the end of last season.

Yet, on the evidence of Tottenham's defeats by Brentford and Newcastle, De Zerbi's rebuild is very much a work in progress.

Liverpool land Barcola, Man Utd cautious

Heeding Andoni Iraola's plea for more wingers, Liverpool splashed £123 million on Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola, but even that eye-catching move was not enough to convince many fans of their title credentials.

Iraola is in his first season in charge at Anfield after arriving from Bournemouth to replace the sacked Arne Slot following last season's disappointing fifth-placed finish.

Although the Reds have landed Barcola, French defender Jeremy Jacquet and Spanish winger Victor Munoz since last term, the departures of Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have left questions about their ability to catch Arsenal.

Manchester United ended last season on a positive note, but the goodwill from their third-place finish under Michael Carrick is in danger of ebbing away following a quiet transfer window.

Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba have arrived to improve Carrick's central midfield options, but United look to have flaws at the back and in attack.

While Marcus Rashford's return from a loan at Barcelona could fix United's issues up front, their opening-weekend defeat at Hull was a damning indictment of their defensive problems.
